TALLY SPEAR - TALLY EP
London alt-pop queen Tally Spear loved by Diva Magazine, Clash and Radio X searches for a new direction within her with a debut EP, Tally. From originally loving American and Folk music, once writing her own material Spear found her true calling in pop and rock n roll. Influenced by the likes of story-telling genius Bob Dylan and the fierce attitudes from Billie Eilish and Sigrid, Tally greets the world life stories from living in London and a dive into her own personal journey of self- discovery.
‘What Do I Want’, the first track on the EP explores the internal conflict of reaching the crossroads of your early twenties caught up with social pressures. Whether to marry and settle down before this toxic ideal that you’ll soon be past it settles in or to live your life to your fullest because you’re young. Clapping and a pulsing bass with softly spoken lyrics is somehow packed with attitude and frustration, teasing a story about a love interest as well as life in a busy city in general. “What do I want? Can someone tell me?”.
With a haunting organ riff soon replaced with a distorted guitar like those found in much of Marilyn Manson’s eerie music brings in a creepiness found within the darker areas of your mind. “I’m an oddball, I’m a real lost cause” Admitting who you really are to yourself, both good and bad is a valuable skill we could all practise. The xylophone riff next to isolated vocals adds a mystical, gothic atmosphere to the track. ‘Oddball’ is the warning label stuck on to Spear’s mind before you go in.
Hidden meaning ‘City Girl’, the rockiest and loudest track on the EP, very reminiscent of YONAKA. ‘City Girl’ is “...inspired by the fact that you can be living in one of the busiest cities in the world… yet you can feel totally detached from the people around you…”, longing for an escape from the entrapment of day to day life as well as personal romantic feelings and finding out who it is you want and where you want to be. Punchy guitar riffs and a dramatic chorus scream out for an answer to these loose ends and emotional torture.
Fun and fierce, Tally Spear makes high quality music seem so effortless as if she was born into the world of alternative music. Well -written lyrics paired with addictive riffs and melodies, Tally makes a huge statement for such a small snippet of her true potential.
