ROXY GIRLS - A WEALTH OF INFORMATION EP
Not to be mistaken for the ambient art-rock allure of 60’s power, Roxy Music, Sunderland lads Tom, Matthew, Aiden and Isaac, better known as Roxy Girls, may lack a Brian/Bryan but certainly don’t lack the brains for writing quick-witted, jet fuel powered jams. That brain power is evident on A Wealth of Information, the EP follow-up to their 2019 debut album A Poverty of Attention.
A Wealth of Information is as chaotic as an episode of The Young Ones with its jutted sonic edges, quick plays of the unexpected, enthralling delivery and hellishly punk attitude across a rather charming blueprint. At a flash 13 minutes in length, it’s also as long as one of Rick’s infamous rants whilst embodying his cluttered speech habits for vocal lines, apparent on ‘Commands’, ‘Poor Cow’ and the final charge, ‘Get Up (Seize The Day)’. It’s understandable considering seven stories have to be compacted into that 13 fleeting minutes but surprisingly they maintain clear and concise storytelling throughout with some punchy one liners on offer including “When you choose to listen, you’ll finally understand / your words are dirtier than the most disgusting thing” (Dirtier), and “I’m sick and tired of your shit” (Command), whilst digging in deeper for “You have to waste your time to learn how to spend it” (You Have To Waste Your Time), “I am trying to be a human being in this world of so much information” (The Droid).
While their lyrics hit hard, their obnoxious pounding drums and animalistic guitars lines will knock you over. A Wealth of Information is about fast, infectious and anthemic grabs with awkward pauses and a generous amount of cowbell (looking at you ‘All Talk’) which will translate into a jumping swell of sweat live. It’s an EP built for the repeat button.
