PREMIERE: SULLY DROPS 'I SHOULD KNOW BETTER' MUSIC VIDEO
To celebrate the premiere we had a chat with Sully to find out all of the ins and out of ‘I Should Know Better’.
WHERE DID THE VIDEO CONCEPT FOR ‘I SHOULD KNOW BETTER’ COME FROM?
“I was seriously considering doing something with dancers and full choreography and then realised that concept wasn’t really right for the song. I met with Gary and he had the idea of the one shot take and I wasn’t sure at first, however I have a lot of faith in him so decided we should try it. I knew I wanted to have another character in the clip that was playing out the literal story line so I asked my friend Zach to jump in and he was an angel. He is someone I’ve known for a while and we share a musical connection, so that was really important to me, to work with people I know and trust. Everything all came together on the day. My friends Sara De La Cruz and Nadia Beardsell came on board at the last minute to absolutely nail the styling and make up.”
WHY DID YOU CHOOSE GARY ROBERTSON TO WORK WITH?
“I’ve worked with Gary on various projects over the past 6 years or so. Simply put, he is my absolute go to guy. I trust him whole heartedly and he is a super star to work with.”
HOW DIFFICULT WAS IT TO CAPTURE THE CLIP IN ONE TAKE WITH THE TRACKING SHOT?
“I was a little terrified of getting it done at first. In a world of editing and post production, I wasn’t confident that I’d be able to keep it together for 4 continual minutes. But we ran through it 5 or 6 times and then we were done! It was so smooth and that was entirely to the credit of my incredible team of Gary, Zach, Sara & Nerida.”
WE LOVE THE MOODY AMBIENCE OF THE SETTING WITH THE NEON PASTEL LIGHTING. WHAT TONE DO YOU FEEL THAT GIVES THE VIDEO AND THE SONG?
“All credit goes to Gary for these choices! I think this setting gives off the vibe of how I was feeling when the song was first penned. I was frustrated and was questioning the reason why we feel the need to apologise for our actions when other people are behaving in a shitty way. The lighting gives off a bit of a dystopian vibe in a subtle way too, which I didn’t realise until we got the video back. As opposed to the place of utopia, when we feel we’re in a good place, this dystopian aspect was very reflective of where we can all be when people don’t treat us well and when we don’t know how to fix that situation.”
‘I SHOULD KNOW BETTER’ IS THE PERFECT BREAKUP ANTHEM THOUGH WE UNDERSTAND IT’S ABOUT AN INCIDENT YOU ENCOUNTERED. TELL US WHY THIS SONG IS SO EMPOWERING TO YOU AND HOW YOU HOPE IT TRANSLATES TO LISTENERS.
“I met this guy at a birthday party who was a friend of a friend and we were all getting along really well. Albeit, he was a bit cocky and made a number of questionable comments towards me, I laughed it off as the vibe was high and I didn’t want to make a big deal out of it because I didn’t know him very well. Further into the night I offered to drop him and a friend off into the city. In the car he made a brag remark about being an A-grade asshole and I, thinking nothing of it, made a witty remark that he didn’t not take well, launching a tirade of horrible comments towards me. It was that moment I made a conscious decision from now on, assholes won’t ever get the better of me. I hope that this song can be a gentle reminder to those people who take things like this to heart, that we don’t need to accept the bullshit. Exercising compassion is important, but when it is to the detriment of your own well being, boundaries need to be built.”
WHO IS SULLY? LET THE UK KNOW WHO YOU ARE AS AN ARTIST AND WHY THEY SHOULD CHECK YOU OUT!
“I’m a big believer and lover of people and have a lot of time and empathy for others. Sometimes that can bite me in the ass, but I’m also at a point in my life that I’m learning to build those boundaries I so passionately write about. Collaboration is the key to my project and I place a lot of faith with the creatives I work with. I’m passionate about giving other people a platform to share their voice and I am highly driven to build my own platform to invite others up onto it. I am thankful to every single person, publication and outlet that supports me and I hope to someday return the faith others put in me. That’s my driving force to have my music heard.”
WHAT DO YOU HAVE IN THE WORKS AT THE MOMENT THAT WE SHOULD KEEP OUR EYES OUT FOR?
“I have a stack of unreleased music I want to launch and I’ll probably make a record with because I’m really happy of how they have turned out. I’ve specifically got three new singles ready for release that were written during isolation that I’m super proud of, so keep your eyes peeled for those releases over the next little bit!”
