NIGHTLY DISCUSSES NEW SINGLE 'NOT LIKE YOU'
Q: FIRST OF ALL, I HOPE YOU ALL ARE DOING WELL, I’M A LONGTIME FAN AND LOVE YOUR MUSIC! I SHOT YOUR SHOW IN DENVER EARLIER THIS YEAR AND HAVE BEEN STOKED THAT YOU’VE RELEASED MORE CONTENT LATELY.
A: Thank you so much!
Q: NIGHTLY HAS SUCH A UNIQUE AND DREAMY SOUND. WHAT INFLUENCES THAT?
A: We really don't overthink it. We just go with what feels right.
Q: WHAT DOES YOUR CREATIVE PROCESS AS A BAND LOOK LIKE?
A: It can happen a couple ways. Usually either I come in with a lyric idea and we build around that, or if I don’t have any ideas, we’ll start a progression or beat and then I’ll write lyrics to that.
Q: WHAT ARTISTS OUT THERE INSPIRE YOU MOST RIGHT NOW? DO YOU HAVE ANY COLLABORATIONS YOU’RE WORKING ON?
A: Thank you! Historically we’ve all been fans of bands. The Killers, Coldplay, U2, were some of our early favorites, but there is so much cool music out there right now. I have been jamming to Jeremy Zucker’s new record a ton.
Q: WHAT MADE YOU WANT TO WRITE THIS MOST RECENT SINGLE, “NOT LIKE YOU”?
A: We wrote this song the week before lockdown started in the US. We had booked a few weeks in a studio in Nashville following our headline tour, but only got to use a couple days before the studio shut down. This was the first song we wrote during those sessions.
Q: “NOT LIKE YOU” TOUCHES ON FEELINGS OF NOSTALGIA, AND HOW SOMEONE CAN STAY ON YOUR MIND LONG AFTER THEY’RE PRESENT IN YOUR LIFE. CAN YOU TELL US A BIT ABOUT THE STORY BEHIND THIS SONG?
It’s about someone I know really well not acting like themselves. It was one of those songs that just came out super fast.
Q: OBVIOUSLY THINGS HAVE BEEN STRANGE LATELY, HOW HAS IT BEEN HAVING SOME EXTENDED DOWN TIME FROM LIFE ON THE ROAD?
A: We are doing good! I think like everyone we have good and bad days, but overall grateful to have each other and be able to make music. So we started in the studio a few weeks before this all went down, so the songs we’re working on are from both before and during quarantine.
Q: BEST-CASE SCENARIO IN THESE COVID TIMES, WHAT’S NEXT FOR NIGHTLY? WHAT SHOULD FANS BE EXPECTING IN THE NEXT YEAR?
A: We definitely have a bunch more music on the way. The virus has caused us to have to shift plans a bit, but we will be putting a bunch out this year.
