ON OUR RADAR: YELLOW TRASH CAN
Introduce yourselves!
We are Yellow Trash Can! Jitta is from LA, and Jason is from Portland. We are here to drive nostalgic trash into your ears.
How would you describe your music to a potential listener?
Our music is what you’d find if you were trapped in the 90’s or early 00’s, mixed with a modern twist. Heavily influenced with an alternative sound, we surely use guitar and other live instrumentation in our music.
Since being a band, do you feel it has grown in the direction you hoped for, or has there been any setbacks?
Well I think everyone, no matter who you are has had major setbacks this year. We’ve had some setbacks from the beginning. We originally were hired to produce an album and work on march designs for someone (The original Yellow Trash Can), and they never paid us / responded once we finished the work. Honestly we have like no idea what happened to the dude. But we ended up turning that into us, and we are beyond stoked for that.
Which tracks are you most proud of to date and why?
Honestly proud of all of them. I’d say Hey Crazy and Twisted (Ringo’s Revenge) though. We really hit that 90’s sound with Hey Crazy. Twisted, we got Jason Navarrete singing solo (Finally). Both some great accomplishments for YTC. Also our latest release, “Talk Nice to Me”, we are definitely stoked on. The bass line is super driving, and it also hit that late 90’s sound.
Where do you feel your band fit in in an ever changing and demanding music scene?
Yellow Trash Can fits in exactly where you need it. If you’re tired of seeing Booty, the same style music and ads on your feed, we are here to save you. Jitta is incredibly talented with animation and video work. He keeps our page lively with content.
Do you have any tips for keeping your mental health in check throughout this period of time?
Eating right. Getting a solid routine that’s malleable, yet consistent to hold us accountable. We FaceTime each other from anywhere from 2-8 time a day, either checking in on each other or just the day's activities. Therapy for sure helps on top of that.
What issues are important to you? How do you use your music and platform to communicate these?
Mental health is a huge one. The world is definitely in a disarray when it comes to mental health right now, due to too many reasons. Toxic relationships, which I’m sure we’ve all been through, are something we both talk about a lot in our music. We definitely try to convey our experiences, to help others get through what they are experiencing.
What are your top 3 albums at the moment?
At the moment, I couldn’t say albums but everything Nolan Garrett. Hugely inspired by early albums from Modest Mouse and they’ll always be a top for both of us. Definitely a fan of ILoveMakonnen’s new album My Parade.
What’s one song you wish you could have written?
I wish I could have written The Whale Song by Modest mouse. What a crazy tune, so experimental yet correct at the same time.
If you could tour with anyone, who would it be?
Nolan Garrett, that’ll definitely happen one day, but for sure him. We are die hard fans. But our dream tour is probably N.E.R.D, that’d be insane.
What should your fans be expecting from your band in the near future?
Expect many things. We produced an album for Briana Piedra that is coming out this summer. We are pretty excited for this to come out. It’s called “Day Dream”. We also produced / Co-wrote an album for Myke Bogan, which is also coming out this year. Both albums we are stoked to be a part of. Aside from that, we have a few more singles coming out until we release our own album.
