ON OUR RADAR: NOX HOLLOWAY
Introduce yourselves!
Hello! We’re Bryce and Parker, AKA Nox Holloway
How would you describe your music to a potential listener?
The short answer, genre-classifying version is alt-pop, but I think beyond that we describe it as immersive, rhythmically charged, and dynamic. We really try to toe the line between familiar/accessible and fresh/alternative.
Since being a band, do you feel it has grown in the direction you hoped for, or has there been any setbacks?
Our career as a duo has probably had the best timing we could’ve asked for. When things started picking up last year during the pandemic, we finally felt like we were prepared enough to have a career in music and know how we wanted to make records and build a brand around that. There has certainly been minor adversity and things we needed to push through, but we feel fortunate to be where we are and doing what we’re doing.
Which tracks are you most proud of to date and why?
Every song that’s out thus far we feel proud of because of their range and variance from song to song. We’re both especially proud of ‘The Reds’, though, because of its poetic nature and the vocal delivery it demanded, as well as the restraint on display in the production compared to our other songs.
Where do you feel your band fit in in an ever changing and demanding music scene?
Being in a saturated music scene these days is quite a challenge and trying to make yourself heard and seen can be a lot, but we feel like we bring an experience with our songs. Something that is cinematic and immersive, but also structured and mixed in a way that feels very current and accessible. We hope this makes our music easy and fun to listen to in passing, but also supplies more depth for anyone that wants to take the dive.
Do you have any tips for keeping your mental health in check throughout this period of time?
Being in our early twenties in this time has certainly been a lot, so we both are keenly aware of keeping our minds healthy. We both use regular physical exercise as a way to boost mental health. We also like to spend time around people we’re close to, whether that means going out or going on vacation or even taking a weekend trip to our respective hometowns.
What issues are important to you? How do you use your music and platform to communicate these?
Mental health is really important to us. I think in our music we try to create such a freeing and moving sonority that hopefully it’s an escape to listen to. While some songs (such as “The Reds”) might express anxieties or fears, they’re addressed in a way that isn’t shaming, and more from a “moving forward” mindset. As our platform continues to grow, we hope to advocate more for mental health and education as well.
What are your top 3 albums at the moment?
I think collectively the top 3 in no order are:
Scaled and Icy – Twenty One Pilots
Justice – Justin Bieber
Glory Sound Prep – Jon Bellion
What’s one song you wish you could have written?
PARKER: ‘Partners in Crime’ – Finneas
BRYCE: ‘The Good in Me’ – Jon Bellion
If you could tour with anyone, who would it be?
Probably Twenty One Pilots.
What should your fans be expecting from your band in the near future?
Our debut EP If Only The World Didn’t Spin So Much drops September 24! We’ll be rolling out some exciting content with it and hopefully make a few appearances live playing shows and things. We’re excited to keep moving; thanks for a great interview!
