SPACEY JANE - HERE COMES EVERYBODY

Sunlight put Australian indie band Spacey Jane on the map in 2020, and their latest offering, Here Comes Everybody is an expansion of their debut — a jangly indie rock sound which proves to be an enjoyable listen as much as an emotional one.

Here Comes Everybody begins with ‘Sitting Up’, which starts off soft and introspective and gradually builds to a guitar-heavy track, setting the tone for an album which the band hope can soundtrack people “taking control” of their lives and of the wider world. This sound carries into the preceding tracks ‘Lunchtime’ and ‘Lots of Nothing’, songs that are sure to be a welcome addition to anyone’s summer playlist.

Things slow down a little bit during ‘Clean My Car’, an emotion driven acoustic track which chronicles the turmoil after a breakup and the difficulties that come with carrying on with the mundane things.

The mood picks up with ‘Hardlight’, a soaring ballad which feels reminiscent of the sun-soaked songs of Circa Waves’ early years, and easily the stand out track — the kind which proves that the band are deserving of their meteoric rise in their native Australia, which will hopefully follow elsewhere.

The wobbly synth-littered track ‘Not What You Paid For’ shows a slightly different sound for the band, something which carries on into the next — and arguably most likely to get people up dancing and clapping in time (or attempting to) —- track ‘Haircut’.

Penultimate track ‘Yet’ is a gorgeously produced song, a mingling of vocal harmonies and emotionally deep lyrics. ‘Pulling Through’ is a brilliant end to the album, a mingling of silky vocal harmonies and smooth acoustic guitar.

Whilst it doesn’t show much of a different side to the band, it proves that — in many cases — the age old phrase “if it ain’t broke, don’t fix it” is true. The band’s openness regarding mental health and emotions (both good and bad) is refreshing, a reminder that things aren’t always great but things will get better…and this might just be the soundtrack for those moments.
