NIGHTLY - NIGHT, LOVE YOU EP
Nashville-based band Nightly found huge success in their debut LP, Night, Love You. Keeping with their story-telling releases, the band has decided on releasing an EP of alternate versions to the songs many fans, old and new, have come to love and enjoy. The band released their first EP titled Honest, which included the track ‘XO’ that earned the group over ten million streams. “From the beginning we've wanted to be an album band. 'night, love you.' was the sentiment behind the band name, so in a way this is our semi-self titled debut”, vocalist Jonathan Capeci explains.
The first track on this EP is a stripped version of the song, ‘Not Like You.’ The track opens with a nice wave of synths, and as the drum machines come in, it’s a perfect alternative to the version released before. The lyrics seem to fit even better with this version with the story being told. The beat with this track is incredibly easy to dance in your seat to, and the music makes it even easier to get stuck in the listener’s heads.
‘So Sly’ was changed into an acoustic version helping to further push the emotion in the track with the poppy beat hidden behind the lyrics being presented about finding out who a person truly is, and realizing how manipulative a person can be all while thinking everything is okay. The song is also a testament to realizing something is wrong and cutting them out of your life.
‘Summer’ shares the same acoustic sense, and helps to create a nostalgic sense in the song as the lyrics share memories with the narrator and someone they used to know and love, even resonating the Summer season with this particular person. This track leaves behind many of the electronic sounds that can be heard in earlier tracks, and helps to give the song a whole new sense.
The band closes out their EP with the live version of ‘Older.’ Including this song, especially at the end is a wonderful idea especially when we were in the situation we are in at this moment with the pandemic across the world. Listeners can easily close their eyes and picture themselves at a show, and come together to this song. In the same sense, it brings so much nostalgia to the table, Even speaking on past experiences from the narrator. It also provides a perfect closing to such a wonderful EP.
