MOLLY O'MALLEY - GOODWILL TOY EP

Molly O’Malley shows us her raw talent as a writer and musician, and her potential as she grows into her own artist.

Molly O’Malley’s third EP is here as the follow up to her series of recent singles. Goodwill Toy is euphoric and youthful, evident from both the lyrics and the imagery paired with this EP. On the making of this EP O’Malley states “I like to think it’s bringing a little sunshine to the world while things have been so dark.”.

Although self-defined under punk and alternative-rock, it definitely edges into the category of alt or electro-pop. The vibrant, steady strums of guitars are indicative of the post-grunge of the late 90’s and early 00’s. In contrast to this the electronic elements, seen in the drums and the vocal effects, of the tracks are modern and colourful. Each track is well produced without losing the sparkle of sincerity that comes with the DIY recording approach to contemporary music. Vocally, O’Malley is steering away from the harsher, punk-y tones seen in her earlier projects and is turning to a dreamier style which aids in empowering her intricate lyrics.

Each of the tracks feels like it belongs in the collections and they compliment each other beautifully. ‘Language’ and ‘Tangible’ offer us a peaceful and blissful reflection on the vulnerability of young romance. The calm of these songs paired with the livelier ‘Princess Mia’ give this EP a multidimensional feel.

This EP shows us O’Malley’s raw talent as a writer and musician and her potential as she grows into her own artist. We are excited to see how far Molly O’Malley will go, continuing to progress in this direction.
