MATILDA MANN - SONDER EP
Matilda Mann returns with Sonder, the follow up EP to the acclaimed Because I Wanted You To Know. Written throughout the pandemic, each song on Sonder tells a story of someone other than Mann herself. The concept of sonder is to consider the complexity of the lives of the people around us, realising that their life is as vast and complicated as our own. On why Mann chose this title she explains “We should keep it in mind, cause you never know what someone’s going through.”
This EP is beautifully constructed with delicate, captivating vocals that make this collection an easy listen. It carries an air of peace and comfort owing to the gentle strums of acoustic guitars which are integral in this EP. Smooth bass lines prop up the melodies, accompanied by Mann’s angelic backing vocals and stylistic jazz percussion. All of this makes Sonder attractive to folk, pop and indie audiences.
The lyrics on Sonder narrate a time in our ongoing, modern history when pessimism and melancholy haunted us all but does so without breaking the listeners spirit. ‘Doomsday’ offers a brighter picture. A true love song about partners who feel like the last lovers alive in the bleak world created by the pandemic. ‘My Point of You’ opens with the lyrics “Holy f*ck I need a haircut, Can’t believe it’s been a year”, a sentiment many of us surely related to over the past 18 months.
Matilda Mann is a musician who is standing on her own two feet, making huge strides in the industry. Sonder is available from September 24 and in addition to her supporting slot on Dodie’s latest UK tour you can see her perform at London’s Lafayette in October.
