HUNNY - HOMESICK

Only three years after the release of their debut album Yes. Yes. Yes. Yes. Yes, HUNNY shakes up the indie scene with their newest EP, Homesick.

Homesick is the perfect blend between modern indie, alternative rock, and the pop-punk hits of the early 2000s. This four-track EP covers a wide variety of topics and features influences from a large range of genres.

The EP begins with the title track, ‘Homesick.’ Although the beginning of this track leads us to believe that the song will be sweet and mellow, it ultimately crashes into a soaring chorus.

Later on, an acoustic version of the chorus is performed before the song crashes once again. This acoustic chorus is reminiscent of emo music from the early 2000s, and pairs very well with Jason Yarger’s old-school pop-punk voice.

Even more emo is the EP’s second track, ‘Loser.’ ‘Loser’ is about wishing that you were someone that you’re not and feeling disappointed that you’re not living up to your potential. The lyrics are incredibly cynical and very representative of the overall negative and emotional vibe of early 2000s emo music. For example, the primary line consistently repeated throughout the song is “I don’t wanna feel like a loser.”

The interestingly titled ‘New Recording 122 August 19, 2020’ turns out not to be a song at all, but a 36-second interlude introducing the EP’s final track ‘Speed Dial.’

This voice memo-inspired interlude features Yarger faintly singing the chorus to ‘Speed Dial’ in his car, and serves as the perfect transition into Homesick’s incredible final track and lead single.

Homesick is the perfect follow-up to HUNNY’s incredible debut album. The EP does a miraculous job of blending together many different genres in perfect harmony, and serves as the model for great indie music.
