COSMO PYKE - LOW
Out on April 5, Cosmo Pyke’s EP ‘Low’ is a bespoke blend of indie, jazz, blues, and hip-hop - a synergy that people can not get enough of. Since his 2017 debut EP ‘Just Cosmo’, produced by Fraser T Smith, Cosmo Pyke has been a notable presence in the music scene. Hits like ‘Chronic Sunshine’ and ‘A Piper For Janet’ solidified his reputation. In 2023, he returned with "Curser’s Lament", mixing updated classics and new songs, reflecting his life in South London.
The 4-track EP delivers smooth, clean vocals set against a backdrop of jazz-infused beats, exploring themes ranging from London upbringings to romantic relationships and beyond. Its ambiance evokes a coffee shop soundtrack, creating a relaxing yet immersive listening experience that effortlessly captivates and engages the listener. Cosmo Pyke has consistently left a lasting impression on listeners with this sound, a style he has cultivated since the beginning of his career. While his music has evolved over time, this distinctive sound remains constant, resonating through each of his releases over the years.
The initial track, 'Outlaw', was written during Cosmo's time at his grandmother's house and recorded at Peckham's Nzoyi studio. Reflecting on his own experiences, the song delves into Cosmo's sense of alienation amidst his upbringing in South London. Its relatable theme of feeling like an 'outlaw' is likely to strike a chord with many listeners who have encountered similar sentiments at some point in their lives.
The second track, titled 'Low', carries a lively jazz vibe that disguises its poignant lyrics. The song explores the concept of finding solace in a specific individual, shutting out others, and grappling with the feeling of being ‘Low’ when that person decides to pursue a different path that doesn’t involve them. This track truly highlights Cosmo's songwriting skills and artistic talent, with its melodic guitar solo to conclude this is set to be a fan favourite.
'Wendy, the third track, offers various questions - is it a heartfelt tribute to a loved one who has left? A reflection on someone who once left a huge mark on your existence? The repetitive, measured lyrics juxtaposed with a rap-like delivery provide a multifaceted experience for the audience to unpack. This track is a very upbeat and exciting one, allowing listeners to interpret it from their own perspectives.
'Over and Over', the final track, blends well with 'Wendy', delving into the deep emotion of love. Whoever 'Wendy' is, they're definitely missing out. Cosmo switches between heartfelt singing and rap-style delivery, expressing the recurring experience of falling for someone repeatedly.
Cosmo's EP is set to resonate with jazz and hip-hop enthusiasts looking for laid-back melodies. It serves as an ideal backdrop for a relaxed coffee shop atmosphere or while you do your work. Cosmo's talents shine through with his poetic delivery, mesmerising piano and guitar solos, and the overall tranquil ambiance. It's a refreshing style of music that deserves more attention from a wider audience.
