Chapel’s new EP shows no qualms in making a big splash into the alternative pop scene. These four songs offer a quick insight into what Chapel are about and how promising the future is for them.
This waffle-house / Prince-inspired duo don’t mess about overcomplicating things: each tune stays true to a simple and undeniable feeling. The simplicity of the tracks on this EP means that you’re pretty much ready to belt out the tunes along with the band after just one listen.
There is an ephemeral quality to each of these short tracks. Songs like ‘Wow’ and ‘Miss the Days’ make you feel simultaneously old and young, as you pine along for a youth that you feel that has just slipped from beneath you.
’Wow’ is one song that captures this feeling better than any. It offers up the bittersweet complications of young love, that feeling of wanting more than they do, the ball is in their side of the court, and yet nothing happens. This song, just like the other three, bottles up the strange finality of youth and pours it straight into your ears.
The bittersweet reminiscing strips listeners of today’s problems and leaves them the precious feeling of intimacy, of which Chapel have proven their mastery.
This band will make you long for the days of your first house parties, the first time you thought you loved someone, the simplicity of youth. I, for one, will be hoping to see Chapel’s name on festival banners so that I can feel sixteen and free again.
