It could be argued that little good has come out of recent events, however, we have seen the emergence of a lot of amazing music, whether it being scheduled for release at a slightly unfortunate time or being directly influenced by COVID itself. Aime Simone’s debut is no exception.

After meeting his now mentor Pete Doherty, Simone was thrown into a world of high fashion, photoshoots and fashion weeks alongside opening for Pete’s shows throughout Europe. Say Yes, Say No is inspired by his travels throughout Europe – notably Berlin’s techno scene, his highest highs, and lowest lows, resulting in expectedly, a bit of a mixed bag.

Lead single ‘What’s Up With The World’ is one inspired by the European dance scene, an uplifting feel-good track that follows finding the courage to be strong after numerous mental health struggles in a world that can be a little confusing sometimes. ‘Shining Light’ follows in a similar way, with the same soft guitars and simple, catchy beat accompanied by finger clicks that almost juxtaposes Aime’s woeful voice, creating a track that sticks with you. ‘Imaginary Lovers’, found half-way through the album is nothing short of euphoric, with a combination of heavy synth and echoed vocals.

Most of the album, however, is melancholic and haunting. Tracks ‘In This Dark Time’ and ‘Strange Inside’ – both singles, were inspired by the pandemic that we currently find ourselves in. Both tracks perfectly capture the feelings of isolation, confusion and uncertainly we’ve likely all felt throughout the last few months.

Still however, both of the latter tracks still have those dance and trap-esque beats intertwined throughout, as if to remind us that that there is a light at the end of this tunnel – which is something I think we all need right now.
