5 SECONDS OF SUMMER - 5SOS5
After the release of their album CALM (2020), 5 Seconds of Summer returns with their fifth studio album 5SOS5. The album contains 19 new songs, each created to tell its own story. With many fans anticipating the album, the boys are able to finally share their creation.
With their debut album releasing in 2014, we fast forward 8 years later with a new album that shows growth and maturity the band has made over the years. Instead of their original punk-rock roots, 5SOS5 presents an alt-pop masterpiece, each song filled with the meaning of healing and growth within love or friendship.
Starting off the album is lead single ‘COMPLETE MESS’, with a mixture of bass, guitar, and drums that makes it an organised mess and aptly titled. It is filled with a comforting feeling, reminding those who feel complete about something or someone. Once the chorus begins, it sounds like a burst of excitement just wanting to be heard.
‘Take My Hand’ feels like home. It’s very comforting, a song wanting to reach out and save others from feeling the worst about themselves. The drums really had an impact flowing well with the vocals. Hearing the words “Don’t you ever let go” makes you not want to let go of this song.
Stand out track ‘Older’ is a piano ballad with a story to touch people’s hearts, a song that is about never wanting to grow old and wishing to stay by the one you love forever. The combination of vocals from vocalist Luke Hemmings and his wife Sierra Deaton are outstanding as they harmonise together - voices filled with emotions that will impact the audience's view of the song.
‘Blender’ quickly became a fan favourite through the song going viral on platforms such as TikTok and Instagram, an upbeat bass melody that is addicting to hear. It talks about the amount of emotions we feel for someone and how we can’t control them. It’s a song that feels fun to get up and dance to.
Finishing off the album is the sensual track ‘Tears!’ It begins with angelic sounds, making it an interesting insight for what's to come next. It is a pop track that talks about wanting to heal from feeling depressed. It’s wanting to overcome these sad feelings and feel alive again. Listening to this song is something I could definitely relate to, the feeling of wanting to feel alive is something one wishes to obtain when they are feeling down.
5 Seconds of Summer’s 5SOS5 does not disappoint, it’s an album that’s worth listening to on repeat and will sweep you off your feet.
